History
|
The name Corfu or Corifo comes from the ancient saying “city of the Mountain point” because of the two hills that stand in the land. Corfu used to have many names in the past like scythe, because it looked like a scythe, or Makria (it means long in Greek), because the island is long, or Kassiopia, Keraina, Arpi und Sheria, like Homer used to call it.
The mythology mentions that the island got its name from the nymph Kerkyra, whom Poseidon brought to the island. The fruit of their love was Faiakas, ancestor of the ancient Faiakes, people who according to Homer, offered hospitality to Ulysses before he arrived in Ithace.
The known Homeric hero arrives, exhausted after many adventuries, in the island where Nausica – the daughter of the King of Faiakes Alkinoos – finds him and brings him to the rich palace of her father, where he is offered the best hospitality and honors that are suitable for all strangers.
The mythical ancestors of the inhabitants of Corfu are present in Homer’s Epic as the founders of a great technological civilization with the best equipped navy and a democratical organized society. However, it is not verified from the archaeology yet.
On the contrary there are findings that reveal the existence of inhabitants since the Stone Age (in Agios Mathaios) and the neo- Stone Ago (in Sidari) and in the Copper Age (in Kefali, Amfioenes). |

Civilization
|
People from Corfu keep the traditions alive. These traditions were saved through the centuries despite the repeated dominations by foreign conquerors. They managed to assimilate the foreign elements in their own civilization and combine them with the Greek element, resulting to a wonderful blend that astonishes the visitor. The characteristique singing accent of the people, the mood to celebrate and dance, the optimism, the warm and true humanity, that represents the Greek values, the rich business activity with respect to the cultural inheritance and the natural environment, the deep religious belief that is obvious from the innumerable churches and monasteries everywhere in the island, the simplicity, the grace and the harmony are all characteristics that form the cast of features of the locals who were lucky enough and did not taste the Turkish domination which deprived Greece the chance to develop for four centuries. |

Information about Corfu
Corfu is the second largest island of the Ionian Sea and it covers an area of 592 square kilometers and a luxuriant coastline of 217 kilometers. It is situated in the north side of the Ionian Sea, in the entrance of the Adriatic Sea, two and a half miles from the beach of Albania. The mythical island of the Faiakes is an ornament of the Ionian Sea, but it is also one of the most beautiful islands in Greece, combining the green mountains and the long sandy beaches. The mild and rainy climate of the island brings out the rich flora which creates the unique color of the island. The beautiful beaches form many bays. The best known of them are: Ipsos, Garitsa, Limnothalassa Chaliopoulou (in Pontikonisi), Mantoukiou and others. Also, there are some capes like in Kavo Sidero in the City of Corfu, Agia Barbara, Kassiopi and Agia Aikaterini in the north of the island, Kefali, Asprokavo and Leukimmi in the south, Agios Stefanos in the west, Arilla, Falakro and Ag. Isidoros.Three rows of mountains cross the island. The highest peak is Pantokratoras (914m). Between the mountains there are many fertile valleys, like Lefkimmi and the grassland of Ropa that are washed by many rivers, which, however, are dry during the summer.Around the island there are many small islands of the same beauty and clean beaches, like in Corfu.Opposite the city of Corfu there is Bido (ancient Ptychia) and Lasareto, northwest stands Erikousa, Mathraki, Othonoi and in the south the beautiful Paxi and Antipaxi. The innumerable natural beauties of the Mediterranean climate, that result in cool summers and mild winters, the history and the rich cultural tradition, have made Corfu into an excellent holiday resort that attracts many Greeks and foreigners. People of Corfu offer their hospitality to the visitors of the island, who experience a unique opportunity to enjoy comfortable and unforgettable vacations.A mosaic of all nationalities and races walk through the picturesque alleys, known as the traditional “kadunia” of Corfu, which create an atmosphere of past times. In this scenery, one can find the ideal place for vacations, since he/she can choose between the small fishing-islands for quite and relaxing staying or the cosmopolitan places with loud night life. Also, the villages that are built in the green valleys are the ideal place for those who love the country or the innumerable beaches for those who love the extreme water sports. |

The ancient city of Corfu was built during the 8th century BC and it stood south of where today’s city is placed, between Garitsa bay and the lake Chaliopoulou. The center of the ancient city stood where Palaiopoli is today, up to the cannon. The market must have been opposite the palace of Mon Repo and it is believed that in the place of Analipsis, stood the Acropolis. The most important monuments are the following:
The monument of Menekratis |
The tower of Nerantziha |
The temple of Artemis |
Palace of Saint Michael and George |
The Ancient fortress |
The new fortress |
The Saint Spiridon |

Excursions
|
The old city lies between the old and the new fortress, surrounded by the walls. Most of the houses are old stone, multy storey buildings which survived the bombing during the war and stand witnesses to the history of the city. The place of those buildings that were destroyed during the war was taken by a few, new multy storey buildings. In Kampielo, which is the oldest residential area of the ancient city, the houses are built close to one another, and although they look like deserted, they are actually inhabited. Even the picturesque laundry is hanged in ropes which are tied from one balcony to the other across the street. And still the housewives throw the basket, which is tied to a rope, to the street when they want to buy something from the street salesman.
It looks like time has stopped in this part of the city, where you can easily get lost walking in “kadunia”. If you take a walk to the square of the city, the Spaniada Square, you find out that it is full of life.
Young and old people walk in the small stone alleys to meet friends and have a cup of coffee with them in the famous Liston, an arcade, in French order, with coffee shops and restaurants, where people are coming and going throughout the year. |
